About Leeway Ballot

Leeway Ballot is a blockchain voting platform built for Africa. It gives universities, corporations, NGOs, and communities a way to run elections whose results are verifiable by anyone, tamper-proof by design, and free from the cost and delay of traditional voting infrastructure — starting on BNB Smart Chain.

The Problem

Traditional voting systems across Africa face structural challenges that undermine trust in outcomes:

Lack of Transparency

Vote counts are announced by a central authority with no way for the public to independently verify the tally.

Tampering & Fraud

Paper ballots and centralised databases can be altered, lost, or destroyed before results are finalised.

Inaccessibility

Physical polling stations exclude diaspora voters, people with disabilities, and those in remote areas.

High Costs

Printing ballots, staffing polling stations, and manual counting consume enormous public and institutional budgets.

Delayed Results

Manual collation across regions can take days or weeks, creating uncertainty and space for disputes.

The Solution

Leeway Ballot replaces central vote-counting authorities with public, auditable smart contracts. A commit-reveal scheme keeps individual votes private until the reveal phase, Merkle proofs verify voter eligibility without ever publishing the full voter list on-chain, and the entire process runs on BNB Smart Chain — a public ledger anyone can inspect, with no server for a bad actor to compromise.

Technology

Smart Contract Core

Elections are deployed as independent smart contracts on BNB Smart Chain. Rules — timelines, options, quorum — are fixed in code the moment an election is created and cannot be altered by any single party, including Leeway Ballot itself.

Voter Privacy

A commit-reveal scheme separates casting a vote from counting it. Voters submit a sealed cryptographic commitment during the commit phase and unlock it during the reveal phase — no one, including the organiser, can see how anyone voted before results are final. Eligibility is proven with Merkle proofs, so the full voter list never touches the blockchain.

End-to-End Verifiability

Every voter receives a cryptographic receipt tied to their commitment hash. Anyone — voter, observer, or auditor — can independently confirm that every cast vote was counted exactly as recorded, without trusting any single institution.
